WIN Past President Gary MacDonald presented a Winner’s Award to the Veteran’s Guest HouseRand Tanner, one of the organization’s founders, accepted the award.  In the early 1990s it was discovered that family members of hospitalized veterans could not afford housing and were sleeping in their vehicles in the VA Hospital parking lot.  The Veterans Hospital Foundation was established, and in1994 the Spouse House opened, providing safe, temporary housing to family members wanting to be near their hospitalized loved ones.  Between 1993 and 1994, major renovations were made to the 1938 structure to increase the guest capacity to 6 bed spaces.  In 2004, with the help of the community, the Foundation was able to replace the old structure with a brand new 4,700 square foot facility.  This home has 12 beds and is accessible to persons with disabilities.  The WIN Board of Trustees was pleased to recognize the important service that the Veteran’s Guest House is providing to the community.

WIN Trustee B.J. North presented a Winner's Award to Andrew Kelly, Principal of Washoe County School District's Hug High School.  Andy relocated to Nevada from Oregon, and brought with him non-traditional ways of running a high school.  He took administration off the “hill” and moved it where the students are.  He created “houses” and each house has administrators on site.  He and his team focus on freshman entering Hug and also have started a program working closely with Trainer Middle School's principal and staff.  The results are that discipline problems are down, attendance and school pride are on the rise, students are experiencing success and graduation numbers are increasing, and extracurricular activities (i.e. school dances) are back.  WIN thanks Andy Kelly for making a difference in the lives of so many students.
